Community Development Library (CDL)

a report

by

Syed Akhtar Mahmood

The Community Development Library (CDL) is an "NGO for NGOs".  It is
involved in the collection, organization and dissemination of information
useful for NGOs.  Set up in the seventies by a group of NGO activists
who felt the need for some organized collection and dissemination of
information, CDL has established a very good track record and earned
quite a reputation not just among NGOs but a wider community who find its
resources very useful. In addition to its central facilities in Dhaka
(library, video production studio, auditorium) the CDL has 27 "rural
information centres" located in small towns. One of the attractive
features of CDL is its dense network of clients at the grass-roots level.

Environment is one of the priority areas of CDL's work. It has a list
of NGOs and other agencies working on environmental issues and Harunur
Rashid, Director of CDL, has promised to send this to us soon. He also
wants us to know that CDL is organizing the Second Dhaka Environmental
Video Festival in March 1999; the first festival was held in
February 1997.

The 2nd Dhaka Environmental Video Festival is on March 12-16 (the first
festival was held in February 1997). The festival will be held at the
Goethe Institute, Road No.9, Dhanmandi. About 60 environmental films
from home and abroad are expected to be shown.

There will also be two seminars during the festival. Ms. Jenny Richards,
Deputy Director, Television Trust for the Environment (TVE)-UK will
present the keynote paper on "From Environment to Human rights." There
will also be a half day event on gender issues. In addition to videos,
films and seminars, there will be an exhibition of posters, stickers,
books and still photographs on the environment, human rights and gender. A
number of distinguished guests from Germany, India, UK, Sri Lanka are
expected to participate in the festival. The slogan of the festival is
"Save Mother Earth Save Life".
